Although winter may seem a long way off as you sit in your garden furniture and gaze across the greenery, it still pays to begin preparations for the change in the seasons
Although garden flowers do not fare well in the winter, there are plenty of ways to protect them from the worst of a British winter. Good techniques include moving potted plants closer to the warmth of the house, grouping them more closely together and burying them more deeply to protect the roots. Cutting the ends of plastic bottles and using them to protect bedded plants will also help defend against frost.
Flowers such as jasmine and varieties of aconites are also able to thrive in the winter, so ask at your local plant nursery for guidance.
A winter vegetable garden is also a good idea, since there are many sorts of veg that are hardy enough to flourish in the colder months, such as cabbages, leeks and parsnips, as well as salad species, including Pak Choi, mustards and spinach.
